What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobiological disorder that affects more than 5.29% of children worldwide. It is characterized by impulsive behaviors, a distracted state of mind (mild, moderate or severe), a short attention span, restlessness, emotional instability, etc. There are three types of ADHD:

  • Predominantly hyperactive / impulsive
  • Predominantly Inattentive
  • Combined (hyper + inattentive)

Other symptoms that may develop during ADHD can develop:

  • Problems with containing emotions.
  • Changing activities with high frequency.
  • Easily distracted.
  • Often losing things.
  • Forgetting things.
  • Being impatient.
  • Having trouble finishing school or domestic activities.
  • Various others.

What are the causes of ADHD?

The exact cause that leads to the development of this disorder can not be identified, but researchers have discovered several factors that prove it is mainly a genetic disorder (ADHD has a heritability of 76%) and environmental (smoking / alcoholism during pregnancy, infections in the central system, being born premature, head trauma, etc.), which favor the conditions to develop these disorders.

The cannabinoides have a neuroprotective effect and improve motor function in people with ADHD.

Use of medical cannabis as a treatment for ADHD

This disorder is very complex and is very important to detect early on in the development process as those with ADHD are seven times more likely to develop other psychiatric or learning disorders. This happens in over 70% of cases in people with ADHD; among the most frequent comorbidities that can be developed are: mood disorder, learning disorder, sleep disorder, anxiety disorder, among others [1].

Findings from clinical trials related to the benefits of Cannabinoids on ADHD suggest that they could be used as a new alternative therapy, especially in motor control Sonuga- Barke (2002) [2], He noted in his study that: “Our findings may be of particular interest with regard to the heterogeneity observed in attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder and suggest possible new drug therapies are directed toward the cannabinoid system” also “current data suggests that the endocannabinoid system seems to be involved to some extent in motor impulsivity and provides further evidence of the existence of different forms of impulsivity that can be dissociated pharmacologically”.

Moreover, the study at the Department of Biology at the University of William Paterson, US., sought to analyze the pharmacogenetics, neuropharmacology and neurotoxicology of the receptors of the endocannabinoids in the brain to analyze the potential benefits of new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases. In their findings, Onaivi Es concluded that “the neuropharmacological features and neuroprotective of phytocannabinoids and neurogenesis associated with the system of endocannabinoids revealed strong evidence for the use of cannabinoids in neurodegenerative diseases with lower levels of neurotoxicity, the remarkable progress in understanding the biological effects of cannabis and cannabinoids have provided much richer than previous tests results and raised a number of fundamental questions about the molecular mechanisms of behavioral and biochemical alterations induced by cannabinoids. [3]
