News: Success with CBD in COVID therapy

The hospital in Klagenfurt, Austria, achieved positive results with the cannabis compound CBD in covid patients. The patients who were treated with the cannabinoid were able to leave the hospital more quickly. The anti-inflammatory and immune-strengthening properties of the cannabinoid are particularly effective here. The scientists are already working on a study that should provide well-founded findings.

CBD: Success with covid patients

The ORF reports that intensive care doctors at the Klagenfurt Hospital are successfully using CBD (cannabidiol) in covid therapy. Cannabidiol is a highly interesting substance, also in the treatment of covid patients, says Prof. Rudolf Likar, the head of the intensive care medicine department at Klagenfurt Hospital. CBD works in many ways, has anti-inflammatory properties and can positively influence the immune system.

In the Austrian hospital, certain covid patients received CBD over a period of three weeks: initially in a dosage of 200 mg, which was then increased to 300 mg. “We saw that the inflammation parameters in the blood decreased and people left the hospital faster compared to the comparison group. CBD supports the immune system,” explains Prof. Likar to ORF.

A study on the use of CBD is currently underway at Klagenfurt Hospital. Prof. Likar is satisfied with the data and results so far. He will “probably use cannabidiol routinely, because it has no side effects.” As the doctor explains, his team has been researching CBD for quite some time. “It’s an interesting substance and Israel is even in the process of approving CBD for covid therapy. So we are not the only ones working with it.”

Cannabidiol (CBD) – what is it used for?

The hemp plant contains over 100 different cannabinoids. THC and CBD are the two main active substances. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce a high. When CBD is used in combination with THC, cannabidiol reduces the psychotropic effect and side effects of THC.

Experts who have studied the relationship between CBD and the immune system have already outlined the positive effect of CBD in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. In addition, the cannabinoid has an anxiety-relieving effect, reduces pain and suppresses nausea and vomiting. Further studies have shown that CBD has a calming effect and can improve sleep. It can relieve convulsions and has a neuroprotective effect. Researchers have also shown that cannabidiol can inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
