Many illnesses cause mobility and motor skill disorders. Muscle contraction, movements, and displacement may be altered and can cause reduced mobility in the patient. On most occasions, people with mobility problems cannot move independently and require material assistance (wheelchair, crutches) or help from other people in their day-to-day life.

The loss of motor skills can be caused by several disorders: movement synchronization problems, strong cramps, stiffness due to lack of joint flexibility, balance or leg weakness disorders due to lack of muscular strength.

Causes and illnesses that directly affect mobility and motor skills:

  • Rheumatic diseases: Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.
  • Neurodegenerative diseases: Multiple sclerosis, Charcot disease, cancer of the spinal cord, brain tumours, Parkinson’s disease, Ataxia, Chorea, etc.
  • But also: Labyrinthitis, myopathy, type II diabetes, thyroid diseases, etc.

In the most severe cases where reduced mobility causes a prolonged sedentary lifestyle, lack of movement, and activation of the muscles and joints in the long term can cause other disorders such as an increased risk of Stroke.

Cannabis-based treatment to improve mobility and motor skills 

Cannabinoids can help improve mobility and motor skills. Firstly, it has already been shown in many studies that CBD has neuroprotective properties. This means that in cases of mobility problems due to a neurodegenerative disease, CBD could reduce the symptoms of loss of mobility and motor skills.

In addition to this, according to a 2012 study[1] on animals, CBD, or Cannabidiol, could directly improve locomotive abilities. The study focused on a group that suffered from a degenerative disk disease that affects locomotion. Several motor function tests were performed to control changes and improvements in the group treated with CBD and in the group without treatment. It was found that the group that took CBD clearly had better motor skills compared to the group that had no treatment, which seems to show that the CBD can have positive effects on improving mobility.

Cannabidiol has many other positive effects. During this study, the group treated with CBD experienced a reduction of damaged tissues. This means that this component of the medicinal cannabis could help to heal the tissue that has suffered trauma. It is also hoped that these results in animals can be reproduced on a human scale and that medicinal cannabis is effective in helping to produce better motor skills and mobility.

Several studies in humans have already shown conclusive results of treating spasticity, another type of motor disorder, with medicinal cannabis. This disorder causes involuntary muscle contractions that cause muscle stiffness. In a 2013 study, 50 patients were treated with CBD and THC, 80% of them claimed to experience a reduction in their spasticity.

Problems in mobility and motor skills are often accompanied by a pain that can sometimes be very strong. It has been demonstrated through several studies that CBD and THC can be very effective in the treatment of chronic pain. Therefore, cannabinoids can serve as analgesics and can replace conventional opioids, which are often made of components that are toxic to the body.

CBD seems to be a very promising treatment for conditions that cause mobility and motor skills problems, as well as in many motor function disorders. In addition, CBD has very mild side effects unlike the common medication. Therefore, allowing you to have a much more natural treatment.
